Its Tuesday again kids so off I went like a good little student to Uni for my criticism class. Let me just say that either tonight or tomorrow I shall be writing a rather scathing review of today’s Lunchtime Concert efforts.
Today we were “treated” to three performers from the WA Opera Company. Sarah- Janet Dougiamas sang from a book on a stand, and though she used it only for reference, it was clear that she hadn’t prepared the piece as well as she’d have liked. By glancing back at the book occasionally she lost eye contact with the audience, who seemed to lose interest as a result.
James Clayton sang directly from his book without looking up once. He looked and sounded as though he was turning up for a practice. It really was a little embarissing.
Katja Webb was perfect as always, and let me say, Thank God For Her. The particular highlight was a series of songs based on the last words of each wife of Henry VIII (well the first five anyway, the sixth one out-lived the old boy) composed by Libby Larsen, titled Try Me, Good King. Each wife had a particular character and Katja showed each in her manerisms, body language and facial expressions. She communicated with the audience clearly, helped by the fact that she sang from memory.
I’m not generally a big fan of concerts by opera singers anyway, and unfortunately this did very little to sway me. I went in with a headache, and its still clanging around as I type. Best be off to find some drugs..
